National City Expands its Historic Resources List
November/December 2018

There is both encouraging and discouraging news for National City. First, the good news, National City is poised to double the number of its designated historic resources, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. The current register lists 32 properties and in October the City Council voted to begin the process of adding 32 more homes. Two homeowners objected, but a motion to drop their homes from the list failed in a 3-2 vote, with Mayor Ron Morrison voting to keep them. "Over the years, Morrison said, the city has lost 'a lot of properties that were truly historic,' " wrote reporter David Hernandez.

The homes will be evaluated and documented by City staff joined by members of the National City Historical Society. Then, homeowners and the public will have more chances to voice their opinions on adding these resources to the register, as they wind through several layers of City hearings. The City Council has the final say.

But that's not all. "The Historical Society has identified roughly 80 to 90 other properties to add to the city's list. The City Council asked City staff to return with a resolution to initiate the designation process for those properties," Hernandez wrote.

With this flurry of designations in the works, National City is making large strides in taking its historic resources seriously. However, we would be remiss not to call the city's attention to their own Granger Hall, which is on SOHO's 2018 Most Endangered List, and which stands loosely draped in a weathered tarp that can hardly protect its ceiling mural and elaborate interior. The 1898 building was designed as a music hall with outstanding acoustics by Master Architect Irving J. Gill and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

SOHO urges the City Council to make moving this magnificent landmark to a site near Pepper Park and restoring it their top priority.
