During the summer, the San Diego Airport Authority issued a draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the Airport's Development Plan. SOHO sent a comment letter urging the Airport Authority to keep the Brutalist and Futurist style main façade of Terminal 1, and to relocate the circa 1931 United Airlines Hanger and Terminal.

Terminal 1's south façade "remains the same today as when it was built in 1967," according to the draft EIR's Historic Resources Study (HRS p. 3.0-7). A significant contribution to the city's broad patterns of history, the construction of Terminal 1 enabled Lindbergh Field to dock and maintain large jet engine aircraft, an advance into the jet age of aviation, and reflects San Diego's modernization through an increase in air traffic. Additionally, this Modern style is characteristic of 1967, when the airport expanded to accommodate more passengers.

The United Airlines Hanger and Terminal (UAHT), circa 1931, is an early example of an aircraft hanger typical of this period. Having been relocated once already and saved from demolition, UAHT is the oldest surviving structure associated with Lindberg Field's earliest development (1928-1933), and should be relocated again, not demolished.

Once the final EIR is released (date to be determined), SOHO encourages its members and the community to send public comments in support of these important historical resources. They represent San Diego's significant role in the history of the air and space industry. You can also monitor this site for the comment period. Thank you for advocating for the historic airport!
