In November, our thoughts naturally turn to gratitude as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches. And at the Whaley House Museum, we are especially grateful for our volunteer youth docents. These dedicated and talented middle- and high-school students share their free time with us, bringing their energy, enthusiasm, sense of hospitality, and love of history to the Whaley House and its guests.
Our youth docents (age 12 through 17) are valuable in helping the museum staff serve guests who visit the Whaley House for the daytime self-guided tour. They greet them as they arrive, answer questions, tell stories, and share the history of the house and the people who lived there.
Through the youth docent program, students receive valuable training and real-life job skills. They gain experience in the application and interview process, public speaking, customer service, commitment to a work schedule, and keeping time sheets. In addition, they meet new friends who share their interests as they deepen their knowledge of local history and develop their appreciation for historic preservation.
SOHO enthusiastically thanks its youth docents for their volunteer service-and their parents for sharing them with us!
