National Park Service Preservation Briefs
November 2016
While we're celebrating the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, let's salute its invaluable series of Preservation Briefs. These 48 documents, which are available online HERE or in print, offer in-depth guidance on restoring, rehabilitating, and preserving historic buildings.
Sample topics that may interest historic building owners in San Diego include #47 Maintaining the Exterior of Small and Medium Size Historic Buildings, #30 The Preservation and Repair of Clay Tile Roofs, #9 The Repair of Historic Wooden Windows, #28 Painting Historic Interiors, and #21 Repairing Flat Plaster on Walls and Ceilings.
Some of the Preservation Briefs address the very essence of preservation. Among these are #17 Architectural Character: Identifying the Visual Aspects of Historic Buildings as an Aid to Preserving their Historic Character, #14 New Additions to Historic Buildings: Preservation Concerns, and #35 Understanding Old Buildings: The Process of Architectural Investigation.
The Preservation Briefs also tackle 21st century issues, such as improving energy efficiency, making historic properties accessible, and seismic retrofitting. And they are essential to anyone applying to the federal Historic Preservation Tax Incentives Program. https://www.nps.gov/tps/tax-incentives.htm
So before you start work on your historic building, consult the Preservation Briefs to be sure you're following the Secretary of the Interior Standards. This free technical advice is worth a fortune.
