SOHO Wins for Coveted Governor's Award
October 2016

SOHO has been chosen to receive a prestigious Governor's Historic Preservation Award for the restoration of two properties it owns in the backcountry: Santa Ysabel Store and Hoover Barn, on adjacent properties in Santa Ysabel.

This 2016 award is the only official preservation award presented by the State of California to worthy recipients in recognition of outstanding achievements in the field of historic preservation.

In congratulating SOHO and the community of Santa Ysabel, the State Office of Historic Preservation cited the restoration of the adjacent store and barn as "an excellent example of historic preservation efforts on behalf of California's cultural heritage."

The state received the largest number of nominations in recent years, so the competition for the 2016 awards was especially competitive, according to the Office of Historic Preservation.

The Santa Ysabel Store, which dates to 1884, is a backcountry icon on Highway 78 at the crossroads to Julian and Warner Springs. SOHO not only restored the adobe and wood-frame building, it also reopened it as a 21st-century general store featuring heirloom and artisanal foodstuffs, back-to-nature gifts, and specialty merchandise for home and garden.

The Dutch-style, redwood Hoover Barn, ca. 1890, is one of the last remaining barns in east San Diego County. SOHO rescued it from a planned burning to destroy it.

This is the second Governor's Award for SOHO. In 2010, SOHO's 40th anniversary documentary Four Decades of Historic Preservation in San Diego received the honor.

The award will be presented November 10 in Sacramento.
