Santa Ysabel Farmers Market
October 2016

Eat healthy, live healthy, eat local, buy local, support your local farmers. These concepts have become part of our contemporary lexicon and way of life.
Recently, giant agribusiness has deprived us of the opportunity to enjoy sun-ripened tomatoes right off the vine, for example, or the delights of biting into a freshly picked ear of sweet corn. In response, people have started the slow food movement, farm-to-table restaurants, and a large network of local farmers markets.
So, we are thrilled to announce that little Santa Ysabel is one of the latest communities to start a farmers market. It debuts on Sunday, October 9 from 1-4pm, at the junction of Highways 78 and 79, next door to our Santa Ysabel Store.
Celia Lawley is a certified farmers market producer in the area, and has spearheaded the effort to get the Santa Ysabel market up and running. It's a natural for the backcountry's abundance of working ranches, orchards, and farms growing high-quality products. "We are a conglomerate of local produce growers who are in need of a distribution center, and have created a farmers market and sustainability fair," Lawley explained.
The market will feature live music and a barbecue, as well as quality educational programs. Lawley sees it as a way of "creating community through direct relationships between the grower and the buyer, like that peach your neighbor gave you over the fence when you were a kid."
The farmers market will help introduce community and visiting shoppers to our Santa Ysabel store and vice versa. The store's emphasis on tasty natural and heirloom food, jam, candies, and even seeds is a natural complement to the outdoor market. Plan a visit of your own and return home with delicious, fresh produce from the market and historically "flavored" edibles from the store. It's a great way to "extend" your backcountry experience.
