Archtoberfest Returns
October 2016
SOHO is joining nearly three dozen, mostly nonprofit partners in presenting more than 50 events and activities as part of Archtoberfest (pronounced Ark-tober-fest) this month. The third annual collaboration focuses on architecture, design, planning, preservation and sustainability. Expanding public awareness and appreciation of the region's important architecture and design legacy is one of the themes that suits SOHO perfectly.
SOHO's contribution centers on one of San Diego's greatest architects and an early modernist, Irving Gill. At the Marston House Museum the exhibition Irving Gill: Progress & Poetry in Architecture is on display. It is accompanied by an illustrated catalog that documents the exhibition and includes contemporary and historic essays, including some by Gill himself.
And beginning with Archtoberfest, SOHO is launching three newly enhanced Irving Gill tours to be offered on Sundays throughout the year. Two feature urban neighborhoods and one examines the Marston House's architectural highlights. The tours are suitable for individuals or groups by reservation. Here is the October schedule:
- October 9 · 10am & 1pm - Urban Poetry: Irving Gill & Bankers Hill
- October 16 · 10am & 1pm - A Progressive Vision: San Diego's 7th Avenue
- October 23 · 10am & 1pm - The Marston House: Architectural Details of Master Architects Hebbard & Gill
