What’s Not to Like About Free Historic Route 101 Signs?
September/October 2023
This new sign to mark the Historic California US 101 Route stands ready to be delivered to San Diego or National City, if the cities respond to the generous offer from the South Bay Historical Society. |
The South Bay Historical Society is making an offer you would think no city could refuse. The group had 20 Historic California US 101 Route signs made to give six each free-gratis-no charge to the cities of Chula Vista, National City, and San Diego to install along the significant 101 corridor. Society president Harry Orgovan offered the 2- by 3-foot metal signs in a goodwill gesture to the hoped-for partner cities in early April 2023.
San Diego and National City have not responded to this generous offer, as of press time. Chula Vista’s signs, however, may well be installed by now. The society proposes key locations for the two unallocated signs (out of 20 total) in—wait for it—San Diego and National City.
It would be historically inaccurate and mighty awkward if drivers and others perceived the US 101 Route as a linear “island” floating in Chula Vista. Come on, San Diego and National City! Be gracious and grateful, and say “Yes, thank you very much!” to the South Bay Historical Society’s major gift and vision of a South Bay area united in a historic California commemoration.
