New Museum Shop Offerings Spotlight Arts and Crafts Aesthetics
September/October 2022
The Marston House Museum Shop is open Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 4pm, so spend some time in the charming old carriage house while you are visiting the magnificent Marston House gardens or after touring the museum. The Arts and Crafts sensibility of the 1905 mansion’s architecture, art, and furnishings runs through the shop in useful, beautiful, and surprising ways.
Supporting small businesses is important to SOHO, and our new offerings reflect this, and include both legacy businesses and burgeoning new ones. Introducing Root & Branch Paper Co., led by Jessie Tyree Jennessa, a graphic designer and illustrator, this line produces exquisite notecards that embrace nature, and, to our eye, embody an Arts and Crafts ethos. Sets of eco-friendly homemade organic beeswax food wraps are available in William Morris designs (wouldn’t he marvel at this invention), and being reusable, are destined to become the food storage solution of the future.
Speaking of Morris, recall his famous instruction to “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” Designer Bruno Visconti’s motto to “Write More, Write Beautifully” springs to life in delightful notebooks covered in lovely botanical designs that are both colorful and inexpensive. At only $3.50 each, grab a handful! And for back to school, Decomposition notebooks are college rule lined, made from 100% recycled materials, and are great for journaling and for the environment.
From across the pond—Glasgow, Scotland, to be precise—we have good-looking and fine-smelling men’s shaving soaps and brushes. We confess we especially like this line’s Arts and Crafts graphics.
And, because it is nice to enjoy a treat while walking around the gardens, we have delicious hand-made hard candies and petite shortbread cookies with fruit fillings from Jocelyn & Company, a Black, female-owned company whose elegant packaging telegraphs a festive gift aesthetic.
Of course, we continue to carry the quality items we have become known for, such as a fine selection of books, many on San Diego history. Art lovers will discover plein air paintings by San Diego artists, featuring stunning views of Balboa Park and beyond. Other specialty gift items—or irresistible finds for yourself—include gorgeous Arts and Crafts style tiles, and natural or geometric ceramic vases and art pottery from notable, historic companies like Rookwood, Pewabic, and Teco.
Stop by any weekend and say hello and see what’s in store at the Marston House Museum Shop. SOHO members receive a 15% discount and all purchases benefit SOHO’s educational programs and the Marston House.
