Meet Marlena Krcelich
September/October 2019

Marlena Krcelich

SOHO welcomes our newest staff member, Marlena Krcelich (Mar-LAY-na KREY-lick). She is a recent graduate of Syracuse University, with a Bachelor of Arts in History of Architecture and a minor in Architecture, focusing on Construction Management. As our Historic Resources and General Administrative Assistant, Marlena said she is eager to take on many roles to benefit SOHO. No problem there! She's already busy contributing to education and communications development and programming with her writing, technical, graphic design, and photography skills, as well as taking on tasks related to historic preservation regulation and policy. At work for only a couple of days, she did a great job photographing the 18th-century Immaculata statue on the Adobe Chapel altar for SOHO's exhibit booklet, media use, and posterity. And she shot her own portrait outside the Whaley House for this announcement.

A native of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Marlena has recently spent time in San Diego and decided she wanted to work and live here. Her love of historic architecture clicked at a young age while exploring the historic 18th-century buildings in downtown Bethlehem. Marlena completed most of her prior preservation work in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park and historic neighborhoods.

Beginning at Syracuse as an Architecture major, Marlena soon switched to Historic Architecture and Preservation, because she wanted the skills not just to design new buildings, but to protect historical ones and the cultural knowledge and enhancement they embody. She has experience in hands-on restoration trades, preservation easement management, and non-profit work. We welcome Marlena's architectural knowledge and preservation experience to help us fulfill SOHO's many faceted mission.
