Exhibit Continues of 18th-century Icon at Adobe Chapel
By Ann Jarmusch
September/October 2019

Cover of the Immaculata exhibition catalog

When SOHO arranged to borrow a rare, venerated religious statue that originally graced the Presidio chapel, our staff knew that San Diegans and visitors alike would be pleased and inspired by her homecoming. Known as the Immaculata, a lovely polychrome and gilded figure depicting Mary as the Immaculate Conception, represents San Diego's early but nearly forgotten patroness of the city, presidio and port. Carved about 250 years ago, the imposing, four-foot-statue has returned temporarily to the Adobe Chapel altar in honor of San Diego's 250th year.

Many long-time San Diegans, families with youngsters, and visitors from far and near with diverse backgrounds have been taking in this extraordinary exhibit. You don't have to be religious, a history buff, or an art lover to be moved by this serene sculpture wrapped up in so much of San Diego's early essence.

Using historic photographs of the Adobe Chapel and its original wooden altar, SOHO has recreated an authentic historic setting for the statue's homecoming, which runs through December 29 (closed for the month of October). Accompanied by a free, beautifully illustrated booklet on the exhibit, this presentation is a gift to San Diegans during the citys 250th and SOHO's 50th anniversary. Admission is free to the Adobe Chapel, 3963 Conde Street, Old Town San Diego. Read more about this special icon.
