Ready Now! SOHO's Updated Old House Resource Directory
July/August 2024
Earlier this year, SOHO announced an update of our Old House Resource Directory, a vital tool for anyone involved in the restoration, renovation, or rehabilitation of historic homes in San Diego, and it's now ready for your use. First launched over 20 years ago, the directory continues to be the premier go-to guide to help homeowners maintain a property's architectural integrity. And it's free and available to all online.
SOHO's Old House Resource Directory offers a list of resources critical to old house projects. It includes local listings of skilled craftspeople, designers, architects, contractors, researchers, and other specialty services, along with recommended products essential to all facets of restoration and renovation work. It also features select Southern California and national listings, ensuring access to specialized resources beyond our region.
But this year's update reveals a pressing challenge: a shortage of artisans and tradespeople skilled in historic restoration techniques working in San Diego County.
As demand for these services climbs, professionals well-versed in traditional methods like plasterwork, masonry, and carpentry are becoming increasingly scarce. Yet their expertise is indispensable in preserving a historic home's unique character and ensuring restorations are structurally sound and faithful to the original craftsmanship.
To address this gap, SOHO is actively encouraging community members to participate in building the directory through referrals. We urge homeowners who have successfully completed restoration and rehabilitation projects to recommend the skilled workers they’ve employed or worked with. We hope this grassroots approach will help us identify and promote talented, experienced artisans and tradespeople who might otherwise remain unknown to most of us.
By fostering a network of professionals, SOHO aims to ensure that homeowners can confidently undertake projects, knowing they have access to the best local talent. This collaborative effort not only supports the preservation community but also helps artisans and tradespeople grow and sustain their businesses.
If you're working on an old house project, explore SOHO's updated Old House Resource Directory on our website. And please, pay it forward by sharing your recommendations of skilled professionals by using our easy referral form.
Here's a shout out to the stars of SOHO's Old House Resource Directory: all those skilled, dedicated people who work hard to properly restore and preserve our historic homes, cultural landscapes, and other landmarks. Let's keep this invaluable online tool current and thriving.
