Celebrating Cross-Border Heritage
Tijuana & Tecate Railroad Exhibit and Congreso 2024 in San Diego
By Maria Curry
July/August 2024
Tijuana & Tecate Exhibit at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum
The San Diego Model Railroad Museum in Balboa Park is hosting an exhibit on the Tijuana & Tecate Railroad through November 17, 2024. It explores the construction and history of the San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway, focusing on the section that crosses the U.S.-Mexico border. Visitors will learn about the challenges faced by one of San Diego’s wealthiest, most ambitious businessmen ever, John D. Spreckels, in funding this international and transcontinental line, as well as the railroad’s impact on the cities it connected. The exhibit features model trains, memorabilia, and documents, offering a comprehensive look at this significant piece of railroading history.
The museum is inside the Casa de Balboa, 1649 El Prado, on the lower level, accessible by elevator. It shares a parking lot with the Fleet Science Center. For hours and more information, visit SDMRM's website.

Latinos in Heritage Conservation - Congreso 2024 in San Diego
In support of Latinx preservation efforts across the U.S., Latinos in Heritage Conservation will hold its annual conference, Congreso 2024, in San Diego in collaboration with the Chicano Museum and Cultural Center from August 8-10, 2024. This event coincides with San Diego and Tijuana’s dual designation as the 2024 World Design Capital.

In 2015, I attended the inaugural Latinos in Heritage Conservation national conference in Tucson, Arizona. It was a stimulating gathering of advocates devoted to preserving places and sites meaningful to the Latinx community, and to recognizing them as integral to the broader American narrative.
This year, Congreso 2024 is concentrating on the western United States, highlighting local initiatives, projects, and success stories by Latinx preservationists. It also commemorates the 10th anniversary of LHC’s founding in 2014. The conference presents a valuable opportunity for discourse on the intersection of Latinx heritage, environmental justice, cultural conservation, and social justice.
During the conference, LHC is offering a historic architecture tour from San Diego to Tijuana and Ensenada. This bus tour will highlight the work of San Diego Master Architect Frank W. Stevenson, who designed buildings on both sides of the border from the 1920s through 1940s. Conducted by historians, the tour will visit buildings in Mexico by Stevenson, such as La Comercial hotel and store, the Foreign Club, and the Abelardo Rodríguez house, as well as other notable historic sites such as the Hotel Caesar, the Bullring by the Sea, Playas Lighthouse, and the Hotel Riviera. The tour presents an opportunity to visit important architecture with the convenience of a guided bus tour, plus a chance to meet Latinx preservationists attending Congreso 2024.
