SOHO is thrilled to share the wonderful news regarding the historic former Chase Bank building located at 4650 Mission Bay Drive and its historic mosaics. Family Health Centers of San Diego, the new owners of the long-vacant building, have announced their commitment to preserving these beautiful works of art.

Fran Butler-Cohen, CEO of Family Health Centers of San Diego, has assured the public that the mosaics, along with the building, will be preserved as they embark on their project to transform the site into a new health center.

Additionally, the iconic sea lion statue in front of the building, designed by John Edward Svenson who worked with the Sheets Studio producing more than 20 sculptures for Home Savings will remain. It will be repositioned closer to the sidewalk, creating a prominent entryway to Pacific and Mission Beach.

The building, designed in the New Formalism style by renowned artist Millard Sheets, features eight gorgeous mosaics depicting prominent figures and places in San Diego history.

The building was once on SOHO's Most Endangered list.

SOHO's executive director, Bruce Coons, said that this preservation effort ensures that a significant piece of modern architecture and art will continue to be a part of our community. We are grateful to Family Health Centers of San Diego for their commitment to maintaining the historical and artistic integrity of this site.

Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm for preserving our local heritage.

SDNEWS.com's Dave Schwab broke the story on June 5, 2024: Historic mosaics to be preserved on former bank building in PB.
