Summer Listening for Preservationists
July/August 2022

Photo of Joni Mitchell's album Ladies of the Canyon. In 2018, the National Trust for Historic Preservation put together a preservation-themed playlist, describing it as “perfect for listening during a summer road trip, while you’re restoring a historic home, or even when you’re at work, writing about old places you love.” We agree there is a strong connection between favorite old buildings and places and the soundtracks of our lives. Now, we bring you our own summer list created by crowdsourcing SOHO Facebook friends, who answered the call with 35 contributions!

Community plays a large part in our experience of music. It connects different cultures, promoting diversity and growth. Music strengthens our sense of belonging and connection with others, and boosts the physical and emotional health of all of us, young and old alike. Just like historic buildings and neighborhoods do!

Songs hold power, telling compelling stories about people, places, emotions, all through a host of topics—including historic preservation of our built and natural environments. We hope you enjoy our summer playlist, and that, like our treasured historic places, these songs and music evoke fine memories and your favorite places worthy of preservation.

Sit back and enjoy Summer Listening for Preservationists.
