San Diego's Egyptian Revival Architecture: An Online Tour
July/August 2022

Image of the opening page for the Egyptian Revival tourSDSU student Satchel Fisher contacted SOHO early in 2022 to inquire about pursuing an internship project for school credit. An avid sports fan and spy novel aficionado, Satchel is a senior majoring in history with a minor in political science.

Drawn by SOHO’s architectural and cultural preservation mission, Satchel wanted to merge his interests and studies in world history and cultural heritage with an understanding of the roles non-governmental and intergovernmental organizations play.

Working with mentor Robin Lakin, Satchel’s interest in Middle Eastern history inspired the creation of an online tour of the early 20th-century Egyptian Revival influence on San Diego County’s architectural landscape. With a focus on extant examples, which SOHO and Satchel maintain should be fiercely protected and preserved, along with unfortunate losses, this SOHO tour includes details not found elsewhere. A Los Angeles native, Satchel Fisher began his studies at SDSU just before Covid-19 restrictions hit. Working on this project gave him the opportunity to get out and explore San Diego in a way he never expected.

After graduation, Satchel hopes to travel the world, pursue a master’s degree, and jumpstart a career in cultural heritage along the way. He has been a pleasure to work with and we wish him well and hope our preservation paths cross again!
