Don Simon and Rick Barr are volunteers extraordinaire. Not only are they repairing all four wheels for the mud wagon with hand tools, they made shelves for the kitchen pantry and the trading post.

Recently, these generous craftsmen designed, created, and installed a barn quilt, which now hangs on the outside of the restroom building. Barn quilts are made of wood and reflect the history of their location. Most designs are painted on wood, but the Warner-Carrillo Ranch quilt is made of carefully cut wood pieces assembled like marquetry and painted in the ranch house colors. The design features the Carrillo family brand and a steer's head, honoring the Warner Valley's long tradition of cattle ranching. Cutting the intricate brand from a single piece of wood required expert craftsmanship.

SOHO is adding Warner-Carrillo Ranch House to the Julian Woman's Club Backcountry Quilt Trail. Other colorful quilts can be found at the Sawday barn in Witch Creek and the Ponchetti barn in Santa Ysabel, both of which share a historic connection to this ranch. Other barn quilts can be seen on barns, homes, and businesses in Wynola and Julian. Find more info about this project and a map HERE.

The Warner-Carrillo Ranch House is again welcoming visitors on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4pm. The reopened house now features freshly added artifacts, more detailed displays and historical information, and an expanded museum shop. Take the Quilt Trail to the ranch house and enjoy a tour soon!
