SOHO Marks San Diego's 250th with a Unique Exhibit and Publications

SOHO is pleased to commemorate San Diego's 250th with an unprecedented exhibit in the Adobe Chapel at 3963 Conde Street in Old Town San Diego, 92110, and a much-needed publication on Presidio Park's plant life, past and present.
The exhibit returns an 18th-century statue to the spot this rare artwork occupied for decades on the Adobe Chapel's historic altar. Standing more than four feet tall, the hand-carved, polychrome figure depicts Mary as the Immaculate Conception—San Diego's early but forgotten patroness. Not only was the Immaculate Conception (the female protector of the city, port, and presidio) inexplicably forgotten, the irreplaceable statue went missing around 1945.
This exhibit is an example of SOHO's imaginative and enriching programing, and a gift to San Diegans, as we review the impact of Spanish colonists that began 250 years ago. Whether you are religious or not, a history buff or an art lover, or not, please come see this beautiful artifact that was first placed on the presidio chapel altar. Using historic photographs of the Adobe Chapel, SOHO has recreated an authentic historic setting for the statue's temporary homecoming. Admission is free from July 16 through December 31 (except the month of October). Read more about this special icon.
SOHO has been strongly advocating the restoration of Presidio Park for many years, urging preservation and regular maintenance of the now littered, damaged and even dead historic landscape plantings, in preparation for this momentous year. We are launching a free, user-friendly publication, with preservation partners.
A colorful, fully illustrated Presidio Park plant survey and encyclopedia will appear on SOHO's website, SOHOsandiego.org, in July. Our partners are Parish Rye, a City of San Diego park ranger who initiated this labor-intensive compilation, and several master gardeners. This essential reference tool can be easily expanded and updated, making it a lasting gift to San Diegans and others studying or just enjoying the park's historic and current plants and trees.
