The Warner Springs Ranch Resort is home to the largest surviving 19th-century Native American village in California, once home to the Cupeño. There are in excess of twenty original buildings still standing.
In March 2018, the Warner Springs Resort filed notice for a major redevelopment project, read HERE. It proposes additional resort lodging and facilities, including more than 600 new residential units, a nine-hole addition to the golf course, a recreational vehicle park, a cultural museum, agricultural uses, open space, and more.
The extent of this project requires various plan amendments as well as a rezoning of the property. The CEQA Initial Study notes that various resources could be significantly impacted including the historic buildings of the Cupeño village, the scenic highway State Route 79, and tribal cultural resources. See study HERE.
Although this project is just beginning, the national significance of the resources is paramount and SOHO will be monitoring developments. We'll keep you up to date in Our Heritage eNews.
