Hobos & Hitchcock
July/August 2018
By Dean Glass
SOHO's Third Thursdays Silent Movie Series continues July 19 with Beggars of Life, a gritty romantic adventure from 1928 about a young woman (Louise Brooks) on the lam after killing her attempted rapist. She rides the rails with a handsome young hobo named Jim (Richard Arlen). Characters they meet along the way, like Oklahoma Red (Wallace Beery) and the Arkansas Snake (Bob Perry), add color to this abundantly entertaining and exciting adventure of chases, train jumping, and budding love.
On August 16, we present The Lodger: A Tale of the London Fog, an eerie, suspenseful tale of a landlady who suspects her new tenant is a Jack the Ripper-style serial killer known as "The Avenger." Made in 1927, this was Alfred Hitchcock's third film but is generally considered the first "Hitchcockian" film, as it introduced many of his signature motifs. Matinee idol Ivor Novello stars as the mysterious lodger who always seems to be prowling the streets whenever "The Avenger" strikes. He reprised the role in an inferior 1932 talkie version with a different director.
Third Thursdays screenings begin at 7:30pm in the Adobe Chapel, 3963 Conde Street in Old Town San Diego. While tickets are $10 at the door, we are offering a limited number of free admissions to these films. RSVP to SOHOsandiego@aol.com; free tickets are on a first come, first served basis. We hope to see you there!
