SOHO President's Message
The 2018 People In Preservation Awards
July/August 2018
By Jaye MacAskill
SOHO's 36th annual People In Preservation Awards, held in May in the lovely Marston House Gardens brought together a "who's who" of seasoned local historic preservationists along with many newcomers to the field.
As someone who has attended many PIP awards ceremonies over the years, it struck me that a sizable majority of this year's award recipients were private individuals and businesses, as opposed to public agencies. The number of awards given to large-scale historic home restorations was particularly notable. To see so many grand, century-old residences rescued and brought back from the brink of catastrophe by new owners gives me hope that more people are recognizing their value and are willing to put their time and money into them. If this is indicative of a trend, and I hope it is, I am optimistic that over time San Diego may experience fewer demolitions and insensitive remodels of historically significant homes.
It was an absolute thrill to see the preservationist of the year award presented to those who had worked tirelessly for over a decade on the implementation of the South Park Historic District, a project that will preserve one of San Diego's largest and most architecturally diverse historic neighborhoods in perpetuity. In addition to some key South Park residents, writer and historian Susan Bugbee and SOHO board member and chair of the Greater Golden Hill Planning Committee David Swarens, the award recognized City of San Diego staff Kelley Stanco and Bernie Turgeon, whose help was crucial in seeing this important district come to fruition.
This festive celebration always makes for good feelings and a good time thanks to the effort that goes into thoughtful, comprehensive nominations and the work of SOHO staff who annually spend months pulling this event together.
Find more information on this year's winners and their inspiring projects HERE. If you know someone who is currently "knee deep" in the midst of their own preservation odyssey, please consider submitting a 2019 nomination on their behalf. While a job well-done can be a reward in itself, nothing says "Thank you for all your hard work and dedication" quite like a prestigious PIP Award.
