As part of the North Park and Golden Hill community plan update process completed in 2016, two historic districts within these communities were given multi-year work plans. Last year, various districts, including the South Park Historic District (part of Golden Hill), were implemented. This year, the Park Boulevard Residential Historic District is first on the list.
Straddling Park Boulevard, the proposed district is in North Park and Uptown. Starting to create this district is exciting because Uptown's historic districts were not given a work plan. Encompassing 118 buildings, 85 have been found to contribute to the proposed district, including the St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church.
Unfortunately, despite discussions with city staff, the church leaders are not convinced of the benefits of historic preservation and do not support creation of the district. St. Spyridon owns not only its church complex, but also the entire northeastern block of the proposed district, and all of its property could be exempt if the congregation demonstrates a "religious use."
SOHO urges the community to help educate St. Spyridon Church leaders and members about the benefits of historic preservation, including sustainability, community character, and affordable housing, all of which it can be argued add up to being a good neighbor. Although city staff still supports the district without this northeastern block, there are several very significant buildings along this block. The church could later decide to demolish any one of them for a parking lot, such as it did with houses at 3688 and 3694 Indiana Street in 2017.
