Champagne Toasts to Winners of the 35th Annual PIP Awards
July/August 2017

It was an inspiring evening. Dedicated preservationists gathered on May 18 under a cloudless blue sky for a champagne reception in the Marston House formal garden. We were celebrating the 35th Annual People in Preservation Awards. Clinking glasses, memorable toasts, and lively conversations were heard across the grounds as cool breezes blew in from the bay.
We honored outstanding artisans, conscientious homeowners, and accomplished professionals whose work has literally changed the face of San Diego for the better. Each of the ten winners has made a significant and lasting contribution to the city or county.
Once again, we congratulate the illustrious winners.
As the recipients accepted their awards, they spoke about their deep sense of pride and accomplishment. Some experienced technical obstacles and problematic budgets, but they persevered in their labors of love. Others had substantial commercial and institutional backing and the benefit of paid professional preservationists at the helm. The common denominator: a commitment to stringent preservation standards and practices so their projects enrich the lives of San Diegans now and in the future.
Notably, the People In Preservation award winners received prominent coverage in the business section of the San Diego Union-Tribune, San Diego Downtown News and its sister paper, Uptown News. Read the May Downtown News report on all the winners. In June, the paper ran a summary of the awards ceremony and winners, noting that six of the ten have a downtown connection.
