Museum Conference Energizes SOHO Staff
July 2016
Laura Lover, Curatorial Affairs & Programming Coordinator, recently returned from Washington, D.C., where she attended the American Alliance of Museums Annual Meeting and Museum Expo. She is a member of the programming and communications committees of the Rising Arts Leaders of San Diego, and received a grant from the organization to attend.
The museum conference drew over 6,000 professionals from a wide range of museums throughout the country. The conference lasted five days and featured lectures, panels and networking events, including an after-hours party at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History.
Laura learned about a wide variety of topics ranging from collections care and working with digital media in exhibitions to using humor as an educational tool. She heard a talk by Robert M. Edsel, the author of Monuments Men, and another by Sebastian Minchin, who repatriated Maori remains from the Museum of Rouen in France. He changed the way the French government looks at possession of human remains in museums.
In between sessions, Laura found time to visit a few of the district's outstanding cultural institutions. She paid a visit to the portraits of the Founding Fathers in the National Portrait Gallery, completed a secret mission at the International Spy Museum, and appreciated exhibitions at the National Museum of Women in the Arts and the National Museum of American Art.
After an invigorating visit to the nation's capital, Laura happily returned to San Diego, ready to apply and share all that she has learned and experienced with SOHO members and staff.
Editor's note: SOHO strongly supports educational opportunities for staff, like Laura, who joined SOHO just last year. Just like any business or profession, a non-profit's biggest challenges include attracting and retaining the best employees, as well as developing the next generation of leaders. Investing in professional education and self-development is a win-win for everyone. If you'd like to help, please donate to our staff education fund.
