- Do you know how Hillcrest became "the gay neighborhood?"
- Have you read the hate crimes plaque on University Avenue? Did you even know one is there?
- Ever read the stories at the base of the Pride flagpole?
Join the walking tour, get a peek into the secret garden, and more.
Lambda Archives' guided Hillcrest walking tour will next be held on July 13 and 14 at 6:15pm. Meet at the corner of Third and University Avenues, outside Urban Mo's, and be prepared to cover about 2 1/2 easy miles during 2 to 2 1/2 hours.
Tickets are $25 ($20 for members of Lambda Archives.) All proceeds fund the Archives' mission to collect, preserve, and teach San Diego LGBT history. For more information and any special needs, please email info@LambdaArchives.com or call (619) 260-1522.
Here is what Bruce Coons and other recent participants say about the tour:
"This very important tour highlights the history, stories, places, sites, tragedies, and triumphs of this modern civil rights struggle. A national and international struggle in which San Diego was at the forefront. A struggle where there has been tremendous progress and, like all struggles for human rights, a struggle that requires constant vigilance-and continues to this day. Visitors will find this tour enlightening, entertaining, at times disheartening, and ultimately inspiring." - Bruce Coons, Executive Director, Save Our Heritage Organisation
"I thought I knew a lot about gay Southern California, but Lambda Archives' wonderful tour of Hillcrest was eye-opening. Lambda knows every nook and cranny, every pertinent gay event that ever happened here. [It] makes the history of gay Hillcrest come alive!" - Lillian Faderman, LGBT historian and author
"A great way to get some exercise and learn about the amazing LGBT history in our community. Learn how Hillcrest first offered the LGBT community a place to gather, meet, and take early steps toward the many freedoms that we finally enjoy today. Enjoy looking up close and hearing the stories of many of our historical buildings and homes." - Luke Terpstra, Board President Emeritus, Hillcrest Town Council
