The sound of music, singing, and the laughter of little ones brings the Marston House to life throughout the year, as SOHO hosts the San Diego Youth Symphony ChIMES program for the third year. This class gathers babies, toddlers, and young children under the broad shade of the Marston House’s towering California oak tree, a joyful natural, historic setting.
The talented teachers lead the group through a fast-paced and diverse 45-minute class, filled with hands-on play with instruments, singing, movement, and rhythm activities. Each child has a set of wooden rhythm sticks, and the beat goes on as they follow along with their parents. The children's faces light up with happiness and excitement as they participate in the class.
For more than 75 years, the San Diego Youth Symphony has enriched the lives of local children by offering quality musical education. Their ChIMES program, or Childhood Introduction for Music Education, with Smiles, is a wonderfully innovative approach designed specifically for infants, toddlers, and children through age 5. The series features songs and activities about being outdoors, perfect for the Marston House grounds along Seventh Avenue.
This program is so popular that every session quickly sells out, prompting registration for an extra set of classes to meet the demand. It's no surprise that parents are eager to instill a love of music in their children, and who knows how many young musicians will have gotten their very first inspiration on the Marston House lawn, under the old giant oak and tall Canary Island pines.
These outdoor events are a true pleasure for SOHO to host, and we encourage partnerships with Balboa Park organizations like the San Diego Youth Symphony. It's a great way to bring little and big people to the Marston “Park within a Park,” just as Mary Marston intended when she gifted the house and its five acres of lawns and gardens to the City of San Diego nearly 40 years ago.
If your group would like to partner with SOHO to present educational programs, please contact us at SOHOsandiego@aol.com; or call (619) 297-9327. If you’d like to help us continue hosting educational organizations like the San Diego Youth Symphony, please donate to the Marston House general fund. Thank you!
