The Marston House Museum and gardens is one of the finest remaining Arts and Crafts era homes in California. George and Anna Marston, civic leaders, preservationists, and philanthropists, hired Irving J. Gill of Hebbard & Gill to design their home, which was completed in 1905 and is now listed on the National Register of Historical Places.

The two-story house, carriage house, and garden walls are built of brick, which has deteriorated and is in critical need of repointing and rehabilitation. SOHO recently received a $5,000 grant from the Balboa Park Endowment of the San Diego Foundation to begin this long overdue, large restoration project.

This generous grant will support Phase 1 and we hope it will help SOHO build momentum to raise the rest of the needed funding. The first phase involves repointing small sections of masonry near the back door.

SOHO thanks Bill Smith of Smith & Moser, Inc. for the pro bono work he contributed to this section in 2020, enabling Phase 1 funding to build on his work. Once completed, this important project will restore and preserve the original character of the Marston House and its gardens, in addition to beautifying this area of Balboa Park.

Special thanks to the Balboa Park Committee, Bankers Hill Community Group, and the Committee of One Hundred for supporting SOHO’s fundraising effort for Phase 1.
