SOHO50 Meets Stonewall50
Come Join Us!

May/June 2019
The 1960s was an important time of change and sweeping social movements in the United States. Historic Preservation was one of these, and as we mark SOHO's 50th anniversary, 1969-2019, the San Diego LGBTQ community will also recognize the semi-centennial of the Stonewall Riots, the event that was the catalyst for the gay rights movement in the United States. That historic day, gay men took an unprecedented move against political, social, legal, and police oppression, resulting in the multiple-day Stonewall Riots and Rebellion.
SOHO, one of the most powerful historic preservation advocacy groups in the country, was founded by artist and activist Robert Miles Parker, a charismatic and outspoken gay man. An art teacher and celebrated artist, he was a fierce advocate for our architectural heritage, showcasing his passion for historic buildings in San Diego, Los Angeles, and New York in his pen-and-ink drawings. Miles died in 2012, at age 72, due to AIDS complications after a 25-year battle.
The 2019 San Diego Pride Parade, on Saturday, July 13 from 10am-3pm, will feature as its theme Stonewall 50: Legacy of Liberation. In honor of our founder and SOHO's and Stonewall's shared 50th anniversaries, SOHO will show our support for our LGBTQ members, supporters, staff, and volunteers by marching as a group in the parade.
SOHO invites volunteers to march with us and commemorate 50 years of great achievements for both causes. We hope you'll put on your walking shoes and support both historic preservation in San Diego and the continued movement toward equality and inclusion with our allies in the LGBTQ community at this fun and rewarding event.
A commemorative T-shirt will be distributed to our volunteers to wear during this historic march, and to keep as a gift. Participants will receive more details. There is strength in numbers, so please sign up today by clicking HERE.
