Deep Cuts in 2020 Federal Preservation Budget

The President's Fiscal Year 2020 budget proposal to Congress cuts the Department of the Interior's budget by $2 billion, the Environmental Protection Agency by $2.8 billion (the largest budget cut at 31%), and the Historic Preservation Fund (HPF) by $64.2 million. The HPF is a vital resource that protects and restores nationally significant sites, as well as supports state and tribal historic preservation offices, the Land and Water Conservation Fund, and National Heritage Areas. All of these preservation and conservation efforts would be decimated by this proposal.

If approved, this budget would also jeopardize the protection, maintenance, and operation of more than 400 national parks across the country; eliminate economic development grants to help the recovery of disruptive operations on public lands; and reduce funding to acquire and preserve significant landscapes. Further, the president's budget proposes to increase funding for energy development on public lands and in federal waters, which egregiously prioritizes the development and mining of energy over the protection of our national parks, wildlife, and clean air and water.

Please contact your senators and congress member today to protest these drastic cuts.
