Update: Making San Diego City Archives Available
May/June 2019
You may recall that SOHO presented San Diego City Clerk Elizabeth Maland with a 2017 People In Preservation Award for Outstanding Public Service in digitizing historical City documents through the Archives Access and Preservation Project.
SOHO recently followed up with the City Clerk five years into this valuable project to learn what's been newly digitized and what the public can expect in the future. In addition to quarterly exhibits on display on City Hall's first floor, and digitizing important Balboa Park documents collected over the years by Ranger Kim Duclo, a small and dedicated group has added surprising riches to the records. Hundreds of digitized individual reels of 35mm color film footage of 1970 streetscapes, census records from 1891-1898, and even the 1888 Charter of the City give you an idea of the range of resources.
As city budget season quickly approaches, the City Council needs know that San Diegans value and support this project. Please make use of the digital records and contact your representative and ask for their continued support of the Archives Access and Preservation Project.
