$15,000 Raised for Uptown Plan Legal Defense Fund
May/June 2017
The Hillcrest History Guild (HHG) successfully reached its goal of $15,000 during a March 19 fundraiser for the Uptown Plan Legal Defense Fund. HHG matched all donations made at the event to support SOHO's portion of the legal challenge to the City of San Diego's Uptown Community Plan Update due to significant deficiencies in historic resources protection.
"It's rewarding to see the community rally in support of this legal effort to hold city planners accountable. Sadly, former Councilman Todd Gloria let us down. The approved plan is not what the community worked on for years, and it will reduce the quality of life for those living in Hillcrest's core," said Susan Fosselman, HHG's treasurer.
Yet, "in meeting our substantial financial goal," Fosselman continued, "the Hillcrest History Guild puts developers and the City on notice that Hillcrest will not tolerate inappropriate development, additional traffic, and undue influence of commercial interests."
Unlike the North Park and Golden Hill plan updates, the City offered Uptown no timeline to implement the historic districts, nor any preservation incentives, interim protections, penalties for unpermitted changes, or infill guidelines. Hillcrest, an important and early commercial district, would lose its community character if this plan were implemented with no mitigation for historic resources.
"Hillcrest shouldn't be the only neighborhood forced to take [on] new density. The quality of life for residents continues to decrease as the City of San Diego adds more and more people (and traffic) to this once great community," Ann Garwood, HHG president said.
HHG and SOHO thank the many friends of Hillcrest who contributed funds and moral support in March. It's not too late to donate to the Uptown Legal Defense Fund! Send a check to the Hillcrest History Guild, 3065 Third Avenue, #3, San Diego, CA 92103, and note Uptown Legal Defense Fund in the memo.
Legal proceedings are a long and expensive process. If you agree that 15 stories will break the heart of Hillcrest, please donate today.
