Geraniums are back!
April 2016
Starting this month brilliant hybrid geraniums will once again brighten the Marston House Museum Shop, thanks to SOHO's Geranium George Project and our hybridizer Jimmy Zemcik and program co-founder Linda Zemcik. Reigning favorites, such as plants named for George Marston and Kate Sessions, are bred for year-round blooming in San Diego's mild climate. Bred exclusively for SOHO, these special plants rooted in San Diego history cost $5 each.
Look forward to May 21, when Violet Hughes, an unusual, very showy hybrid, makes its debut. It is named after an angel in the popular Suzy's Zoo books, created by San Diegan Suzy Spafford. Since 2010, Spafford has generously lent the whimsical names of some of her most colorful characters to our nonprofit geranium propagating project. Violet Hughes is one of those rare geraniums with petals that change color as the blossoms age, resulting in a mass of multicolored blooms. Just imagine violet and violet pink fading to white, truly angelic.
One of last year's most popular hybrids, Ollie Marmot (another Suzy's Zoo character), will also be available sometime in May. All of the geraniums sell quickly, so come now for the season's first assortment and check back often.
