March/April 2025
 |
Upcoming Penning the Past Features: Explore The History of Oceanside with Kristi Hawthorne on March 8 and uncover hidden stories in Forgotten San Diego with David Marshall and Eileen Magno on April 12. |
SOHO’s highly anticipated Penning the Past author series about our region’s historic people and places, returned in February 2025, setting the stage for another outstanding year of illuminating lectures. Author and historian Sandra Bonura kept our audience thoroughly entertained with her engaging presentation on Empire Builder: John D. Spreckels and the Making of San Diego. Through vivid storytelling and meticulous research, Sandra brought to life the fascinating journey of Spreckels, the influential entrepreneur who had a strong hand in shaping San Diego’s destiny.
Viewers from across the county and beyond tuned in via Zoom, eager once again to explore San Diego’s rich past. Sandra demonstrated her incredible narrative skills while sharing rare insights, anecdotes, and archival images that underscored Spreckels’ legacy.
After this strong start, Penning the Past promises an exciting lineup once a month through November 2025. On March 8, Kristi Hawthorne, director of the Oceanside Historical Society, will present the history and evolution of her coastal gem of a city. Future speakers include Richard Carrico, Gary Fogel, Eileen Magno, David Marshall, Doug Mengers, Janet O’Dea, and two returning favorites, Katherine Hon and Gary Mitrovich, back with fresh topics.
Don’t miss this exceptional opportunity to explore the fascinating stories of San Diego’s historic neighborhoods, its people, and cultural landmarks from your personal comfort zone. Talks are held on the second Saturday of the month from 11am to noon. Penning the Past is free for SOHO members and $10 per lecture for non-members. You can register in advance online.
And take advantage of a valuable SOHO bonus at your leisure: If you’d like to watch or rewatch any of last year’s lectures, visit us on YouTube, where the complete 2024 series is on tap. And be sure to stop by the Marston House Museum Shop to purchase the books discussed in the series.
Thank you to all who joined SOHO for the first talk of 2025. We look forward to having you with us again next month and beyond!
