Citizens Coordinate for Century 3, C-3, the venerable citizens group that advocates good planning, design, and environmental policy in San Diego, and the University Heights Historical Society are offering free podcasts and webinars of interest to historic preservationists, historians, and other curious souls.
A year ago, C-3 started a podcast series and oral history project called The Finest City. More than 15 podcasts are now available online. The guests include well-known leaders, such as artist and designer James Hubbell, former City Architect Michael Stepner, and SOHO member and activist Judith Swink. The podcasts provide a wealth of ideas and testimony on subjects ranging from the influence of the late Modernist architect-interior designer team, Lloyd and Ilse Ruocco, to environmental justice over a burning navy ship and the special relationship between San Diego and Tijuana.
The University Heights Historical Society will help you get started researching your historic home and de-mystify submitting a nomination for historic designation with two free hour-long webinars in March. “Now is an excellent time to think about historically designating your home not only because of Mills Act property tax benefits but because of new state tax incentives for rehabilitation of historic structures,” UHHS writes.
On Thursday, March 24 at 6pm, Amie Hayes, SOHO’s senior historic resources specialist, will speak on “Historic Designation: Facts, Process, and Benefits.” In addition to advocacy and other duties, Amie serves as SOHO’s field representative educating the public about the role and benefits of historic preservation.
On Thursday, March 31 at 6pm, Doug Mengers, senior archaeologist/historian with PanGIS, Inc., will walk viewers through “Historic Designation: Research and Report Preparation” and offer tips for success.
