Kate Sessions Book Launch Party
By Bobbie Bagel
March/April 2020
Kate Sessions (1857-1940) may be San Diego's most famous woman, past or present. There is tremendous interest in her life and accomplishments. Sessions was a talented writer as well as a fine horticulturist, pioneering botanist, nursery owner, and businesswoman. Her articles in California Garden magazine are both entertaining and informative.
So, with great enthusiasm and excitement, the San Diego Floral Association is celebrating the launch of their new edition of The Complete Writings of Kate Sessions in California Garden with a public party in the Marston House formal gardens.
The first issue of California Garden was published in July 1909. It is the oldest horticulture magazine in continuous publication in the United States. Sessions was an early and frequent contributor.
The Floral Association's book launch party on Sunday, March 22 beginning at 2pm, will be held at a most appropriate venue. Sessions and George Marston were close friends and collaborators over many decades, especially on developing Balboa Park.
Editors John Blocker, Nancy Carol Carter, Thea Gurns, and Lee Somerville have enhanced this new edition with reproductions of vintage advertisements from Sessions' nursery, rarely published historic photos, two oil portraits, and a biographical time line.
The San Diego Floral Association has a great program planned for the launch, including a Q&A, and remarks by the editors. There will be time for refreshments, conversation, and bookselling. Then, Carter will lead an informal walking tour down Seventh Avenue to the site of one of Sessions' original gardens.
Cheers to the San Diego Floral Association for producing this fine publication, available at the launch for $20, and for hosting what is sure to be a lovely garden party.
Please come and enjoy the festivities, blooming garden, and an important new book on Sunday afternoon, March 22.
