Having closely monitored this controversial housing production bill for two years along with statewide preservation partners including the California Preservation Foundation, stakeholders first tried to work with the bill's author, Senator Scott Weiner, by suggesting modified language. But the senator, who represents San Francisco (District 11), refused to modify the bill so that the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) would continue to apply to historical resources, therefore SOHO vehemently opposed SB 50.

SOHO recognizes the need for affordable housing and has advocated for it for decades, but a bill that negates CEQA and other important quality of life factors as SB 50 did, is certainly not the right one.

As SOHO's historical resources specialist, I was sent to Sacramento twice to lobby against SB 50, and we stand ready, with our colleagues, to help draft a bill that deals with the production of affordable housing within existing neighborhoods and historic districts while protecting our irreplaceable historic resources. We will keep you apprised.
