Two matching vintage Queen Anne style wingback chairs have been renewed with a professional upholstery makeover. Originally used in the Marston House, the chairs went into storage in the basement, maybe for decades. For the past several years, they have provided seating for customers browsing books or taking a break in the Marston House Museum Shop.
While the basic structure of the chairs was solid and strong, the fabric was frayed, damaged, and discolored. But now, thanks to students at the San Diego Educational and Cultural Complex (ECC) and their instructor, assistant professor Ernie Romero, they have been reupholstered, in attractive celadon color fabric with an embossed fern pattern. The chairs look elegant, and with new filler in the cushions, they are very comfortable.
The ECC's Ocean View Boulevard campus specializes in adult vocational training. The school teaches skills, like upholstery, that can lead to jobs.
By going through the ECC class, SOHO covered the cost of materials, while students Sonia Hernandez and Marvelo Hidalgo did the work as a class assignment. They did a great job. We're grateful to them and Mr. Romero for making this contribution to SOHO!
The chairs are back in the Marston House Museum Shop in the carriage house, available for guests and customers to relax, enjoy the ambiance of the museum shop, and visit with volunteers and staff members. So next time you stop by the museum shop, settle in, and have a seat.
