SOHO President's Message
March/April 2018
By Jaye MacAskill
Welcome to the spring edition of SOHO's eNews!
If you are a SOHO member or a regular eNews reader, you know by now that SOHO staff works at full speed all year long. Among many other activities, spring is when staff begins planning the annual People In Preservation Awards, held in May. The PIP Awards are a well-respected, powerful tool to raise public awareness about historic preservation throughout the San Diego region. The winners include a broad range of notable, recently completed preservation projects from all over San Diego, bringing together a large and diverse group of people, from first-time "do-it-yourselfers" to seasoned professionals. The ceremony and reception, held in the Marston House's lovely formal garden against the stunning backdrop of the Arts & Crafts home, is one of my all-time favorite yearly SOHO events. It always feels magical to me, and I leave the party with a spring in my step, smile on my face, and a renewed sense of optimism inspired by our winners.
Please note: the deadline for nominations to PIP is coming up fast: Friday, March 16 at 5pm! We need your submissions! If you have a neighbor or colleague who has done a phenomenal residential restoration, or know of a commercial project involving a historic property brought back to life in your community or beyond, please submit a nomination ASAP. Don't be shy; you can even nominate yourself! Click HERE. The process is easy, but if you have questions or need help, SOHO staff is happy to assist you.
One of my many favorite things about attending the PIP Awards ceremony is having the pleasure of meeting new SOHO members and welcoming them into the fold. If you are not a SOHO member but you enjoy reading the eNews and being kept up to date with the local historic preservation scene, may I suggest that now might be the perfect time to join? We would love to have you. We currently have more than 4,000 eNews subscribers, but not everyone has made a commitment to support historic preservation by becoming a SOHO member.
An important note to our non-member readers: You may not realize this, but for SOHO to maintain its position as a strong and credible public advocate, we literally need to be able to count you as being with us. The volume of our collective voices makes a real difference to those in decision-making positions at all levels of government. If only a fraction of you readers became members today, it could have a significant impact on what we achieve in the future in saving our local heritage. Please join us! Just click HERE.
