SOHO signed onto a letter that opposes HR 4532, a bill that proposes to remove 1.1 million acres of land from Bears Ears National Monument in southeastern Utah. Delivered to the House of Representatives' Natural Resources Committee on February 13, this letter originated with the Coalition for American Heritage. It states reasons not to advance this legislation and its management structure that would reduce input from five sovereign Tribal Nations while ignoring two others. The bill does acknowledge that this cultural landscape is not appropriate for new development or mining.

However, SOHO and other preservation, archeological, cultural organizations and tribes maintain that given Bears Ears' evidence of over 12,000 years of human history, this National Monument must be protected in perpetuity. Read the letter.

An item in the Coalition's February newsletter reports Coalition Warns Against Shrinking Bears Ears. It names SOHO as one of its four partner organizations and the National Trust for Historic Preservation as opposing HR 4532. Read it HERE.
