Women's History Month
March 2016
Women's History Month brings a lovely group show of works by women plein-air painters to the Marston House Museum Shop. All of the works depict Balboa Park and were painted by leading regional artists, including Scottie Brown, Pat McGeeney, Dot Renshaw, and Toni Williams.
You may recognize some of their work and styles from last summer's highly successful "Art of the Park, 100 Years of Art in Balboa Park (1915-2016)" and related monthly Marston Garden plein-air art shows. SOHO made some great friends while exhibiting the work of these contemporary artists and we wish to continue the relationship by consigning some of their work on a rotating basis. More artists will be added as the year goes on.
Consider starting or expanding your art collection with paintings that resonate with the history and vitality of Balboa Park. You'll be following in the footsteps of many of San Diego's founding families who both celebrated and supported important artists. Your purchase will benefit living artists who enrich our lives and the Marston House!
A new, groundbreaking showcase of women's art can also be found in the shop in Emerging from the Shadows: A Survey of Women Artists Working in California, 1860-1960 by Maurine St. Gaudens. This four-volume set chronicles the lives and work of 320 trailblazing artists in alphabetical order. St. Gaudens, an author, curator and conservator who lives in Southern California, researched and uncovered personal and professional information on the artists, who worked in a host of styles and media. Some are well-known, but dozens of merit might otherwise have been forgotten or lost to history. New information and many of the more than 2,000 images have not been published before, according to Shiffer Publishing.
Last year, St. Gaudens was a lender to "Art of the Park" and she generously contributed biographical information to its catalog.
