Penning the Past Returns for Year Two
By Dean Glass
January/February 2025

Our popular "Penning the Past" talks resume February 8, 2025, with author Sandra Bonura discussing Empire Builder: John D. Spreckels and the Making of San Diego. Zoom talks occur on the second Saturday of each month, February through November, from 11am to noon. You can expect enriching, sometimes surprising, lectures celebrating San Diego places with rich and diverse histories.

Our exciting lineup of authors and historians is ready to share the fascinating stories of San Diego’s distinct historic neighborhoods. Following Sandra, this year’s speakers include Richard Carrico, Gary Fogel, Kristi Hawthorne, Eileen Magno, David Marshall, Doug Mengers, Janet O’Dea, and two favorites returning from last year. Katherine Hon and Gary Mitrovich were such a hit that we couldn’t wait to invite them back with new topics.

Mark your fresh, new 2025 calendars now! You’ll find the schedule and how to register online. Stay tuned for updates, as we complete the schedule. We hope to see you on February 8 and beyond!

Looking back for a moment, SOHO thanks everyone who came to the “Penning the Past” book signing at the Marston House Museum Shop on December 1, 2024. Special appreciation goes to our authors in attendance—Thomas Cesarini, Katherine Hon, Gary Mitrovich, and Janet O’Dea—whose engaging presence and bestselling books made the event a resounding success. We even sold out of Katherine’s book, San Diego’s North Park! Sharing warm camaraderie, guests enjoyed hot cider, cookies, Christmas music played on vintage vinyl records, and a festive holiday shopping experience.
