The Gift of Your Time - It's the Marston Way

Are you seeking a rewarding way to serve the community, meet people from around the globe, and learn more about San Diego’s rich history? Do you have an interest in San Diego history, architecture, culture, and historic houses? Do you enjoy sharing your knowledge and passion with others?
If so, why not start the new year by joining SOHO’s volunteer team at the Marston House Museum as an exhibit docent for our permanent exhibit, “The Marston Legacy: Progress and Preservation.” This exhibit demonstrates the forward thinking and lasting contributions of one of the region’s leading families in their handsome former home, the 1905 Marston House Museum in Balboa Park.
Exhibit docents serve a different role than tour guide docents. Exhibit docents act as conversational guides to visitors in the otherwise self-guided exhibit rooms, highlighting the Marston family’s important legacy through their progressive philanthropic and civic works, and the development of the Marston Company, from its infancy as a general dry goods mercantile into San Diego’s first multi-story, state-of-the-art luxury department store.
No experience is required to become an exhibit docent. Training is a comfortable process of shadowing experienced docents and reading materials we provide as you prepare to docent on your own. While exhibit docents do not lead guided tours, they are available to answer questions, share stories, and bring the exhibit to life for our guests. Exhibit docents will have the opportunity to lead guided tours in the future, should they desire to do so.
As a Marston House docent you become an integral part of SOHO’s volunteer team dedicated to the educational mission, care, and preservation of the Marston House.
In addition, SOHO volunteers enjoy free admission to our Marston House and Warner-Carrillo Ranch House museums, and a 15% discount in our museum shops!
