Preservationists Take Teachers Training Annex #1 Under Their Wing
January/February 2019

Teachers Training Annex #1The 1910 Renaissance Revival Teachers Training Annex #1 in University Heights, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, came off SOHO's Most Endangered List because, along with supplying a new roof, the San Diego Unified School District now has an adaptive reuse policy for historic buildings. In addition, ballot measure YY, which provides funding to rehabilitate this resource, passed in November 2018. With strong support from SOHO, the University Heights Library Task Force, and the Community Coalition of University Heights, the School Board voted last July to preserve and repurpose properties on the Normal Street Campus, which includes the nearby Teachers Training Annex #1 at 4193 Park Boulevard. The board's resolution called for a task force composed of district and community representatives. In December, the Superintendent reported gto the School Board on the development of this task force, which will include members of the Library Task Force, Community Coalition, and University Heights Historical Society, as well as SOHO.

While still a work in progress, this hard-won preservation victory arrives thanks to the efforts of many residents and groups, including SOHO. Courtesy of the Community Coalition of University Heights, read the arduous 120-year chronology, from the building's design by Nathan Ellery and George C. Sellon, and construction in 1898 through 2018.
