San Diego City and County Designations in November 2018
By A. Hayes
January/February 2019

The City of San Diego Historical Resources Board closed the year by designating three new historical resources, all within the Uptown community, and by adding a new historic district. Thanks to no public appeals, the Melhorn and Son Historic District in North Park is now official! The October designation of a 1914 Arts and Crafts bungalow, 3941 Albatross Street in Hillcrest, is being appealed, HRB staff reported.

The board also approved the relocation of the designated buildings at 719 and 721 14th Street, which run through to F Street, and they will become part of the East Village Green park.

4179 Palmetto Way in Mission Hills is an Arts and Crafts era bungalow constructed in 1919 by Master Builder Alexander Schreiber. Designated under C for exemplary architecture as well as D for Master Schreiber, the character defining features include the deep eaves with exposed rafters, vertical gable venting, square tapered porch columns on cement piers, wood transom and sash windows, and more.

3404 Front Street in Hillcrest illustrates the early Modern style with Mission Revival influences. Designed in 1921 by Louis Gill, this house represents the master architect's notable work in quality and style from early in his solo career when he was influenced by his uncle, Master Architect Irving J. Gill. Returning to remodel the house in 1924 and again in 1930, Louis Gill added a sunroom and maid's quarters, converted the north balcony into a screened porch and the garage into a dining room, and designed a new garage, among other modifications. Designated under Criteria C and D, for the architectural style as well as the master architect, the home's features include the rectangular massing and smooth stucco exterior, clean lines and lack of ornament, arched entry, and wood casement windows.

The residential high-rise at 2212 La Callecita in Mission Hills was designed in the Spanish Eclectic style by Master Designer Ralph Hurlburt in 1926 and constructed by Master Builder Charles Tifal. Designated under Criterion D for these two masters, this house was featured on the cover of "Distinctive Homes," their 1926 architecture brochure. Features include the use of reinforced concrete as a primary building material, the asymmetrical cross-gable façade, mission clay tile with exposed rafter tails, chamfered porch posts, and a double ceramic chimney pot.
