Plein-Air Painters Brush Up on Balboa Park
January/February 2018
By Bobbie Bagel and Ann Jarmusch
The Plein-Air Painters of San Diego (PAPASAN) will fan out around the Marston House, armed with paint brushes, canvas, and easels on Saturday, January 20, 2018 doing what they do best: preserve landscapes.
Please join SOHO for this intriguing "Paint Out" and watch accomplished artists at work from 10:30am to 3pm. You'll see some of San Diego's most talented plein-air painters create their magic while celebrating the Marston House and other Balboa Park landmarks.
Bring a picnic lunch or simply stroll the grounds, chatting with and photographing the artists, if you wish. In addition to spots in the formal garden, you may find roving artists capturing the architecture of the mansion—listed on the National Register of Historic Place—and its carriage house, or the enormous California live oak tree out front.
PAPASAN is made up of professional artists who, remarkably, have been painting different locales together every week since 1999. "This outdoor focus allows artists to document the unique, varied, and sometimes endangered landscapes in San Diego County," said longtime member Joan Boyer.
It is valuable work. The senseless Plaza de Panama Project remains poised to destroy Balboa Park's historic core and the iconic view of Cabrillo Bridge as it stretches toward the park's original 1915 buildings. Through art displays and other activities, SOHO aims to raise public awareness that the essence of the park is at risk.
The participating artists will also be showing and selling finished paintings of the park, with 20 percent of the proceeds benefiting SOHO. They include Joan Boyer, Dorothy Oldsen Herman, Pamela Ingwers, Rita Pacheco, Jeffrey Remmer, Lynne Schulnik, and Toni Williams. Please come enjoy a day of outdoor art with talented painters who are helping to preserve San Diego's renowned Balboa Park through their lasting work.
