Guests at SOHO's members only holiday party in December enjoyed scenic views from the second-story deck of the Hans Hirte Haus in Park West. It was almost twilight, and the downtown skyline was gleaming. Red wine and eggnog flowed, signaling the start of a delicious holiday season. SOHO's 2016 holiday party was off to a great start.
Members really look forward to this annual event. Each year the party is held at a historic home of note. SOHO members like nothing better than the chance to experience one of these beauties from the inside.
Diana and Joe Cordileone, the homeowners, were gracious hosts for the party, and welcomed over one hundred people into their home.
Built in 1923, this house is a charming example of Mission Revival architecture, with an Arts and Crafts interior. Remarkably, it still has most of its original features inside and out, including the rare Batchelder-designed fountain in the entryway, tile work, and cast iron light fixtures and wall sconces. Fine hardwood floors, skylights, and even bathroom cabinetry remain unchanged. SOHO members were buzzing with excitement as they noticed all of these details.
This house is also important for its association with renowned artist Charles Fries. Called the "Dean of San Diego Painters," Fries was a close friend of the original owner. One of his works hangs over the fireplace in the living room. He also created a unique plaster relief mural for an upstairs room.
SOHO's holiday parties aren't just popular for their historic venues. They also have a long tradition of outstanding potluck dinners. Needless to say, there were no leftovers of the savory entrees and traditional desserts.
Good food, great conversations, and beautiful surroundings. That's the way SOHO likes to celebrate the holidays. Cheers!
