Vallecito Stage Station
37349 Great Southern Overland Stage Route, Julian

The Vallecito Stage Station holds a pivotal place in California's rich history as a vital stagecoach stop during the mid-19th century. Serving as a key resting point along the Butterfield Overland Mail route, the adobe structure played a crucial role in connecting the east and west coasts of the United States. This historic site stands as a witness to the spirit and perseverance of countless individuals and families who traversed the challenging desert terrain seeking new opportunities in the expanding frontier.

Despite its significance, the Vallecito Stage Station has fallen into disrepair over the years. The county made commendable efforts to restore the site in the late 1990s, thanks to a collaborative initiative by SOHO with various community groups, volunteers, and the county. At that time, exterior walls were repaired and restored, and adobe restoration contractor Mark Sauer contributed his professional expertise, equipment, and labor.

However, the site's condition has worsened in recent years. In 2019-2020, a severe storm caused a significant portion of the west wall to collapse. Though some reconstruction and repair work was carried out using FEMA funds for this, the county has been reluctant to invest further in the much-needed restoration efforts. One exception: Six dedicated county park rangers underwent training and repaired the base of the building.

San Diego County holds a crucial role in safeguarding the historic landmarks under its care and ensuring they endure for future generations. We ask that funds be earmarked to address the condition, and to stabilize and prevent further deterioration of the Vallecito Stage Station.
