San Diego's Historic Streetlights
Beloved Kensington, where the picturesque historic streetlights were linked to Master Architect Richard Requa, is the latest victim. After months of advocacy and conversations with the city to restore them in place, city workers went ahead and destroyed the originals. This is a blatant betrayal of public trust.
These historic streetlights have graced San Diego’s neighborhoods for over a century, serving as silent witnesses to the city’s evolution. They are not only structurally sound but could endure for another hundred years with minimal restoration. Yet, despite their intrinsic value, these historic fixtures are now under immediate threat due to the City of San Diego’s fiscally irresponsible plan to replace them with new, unnecessary fixtures—a decision that is unwarranted and counterproductive.
San Diego’s historic streetlights embody the craftsmanship and design ethos of their eras, enhancing the sense of place and identity for residents and visitors alike. Discarding these irreplaceable fixtures undermines the city’s cultural heritage, erasing tangible links to our shared past. This wasteful decision dismisses the existing infrastructure’s value and contradicts sustainable practices, adding unnecessary landfill waste and disregarding the community’s wishes.
Urgent action is needed to stop this unnecessary demolition and advocate for the preservation of these iconic streetlights.
Call to Action Write your city council person and the mayor and tell them to stop the stupidity for other community’s this is planned for. Halting the replacement plan is not just a matter of practicality; it's a commitment to honoring San Diego's history and fostering a sustainable future. The time for action is now, before these invaluable pieces of the city's heritage are lost forever.
