Big Stone Lodge
Designated as Poway Historic Site 16 and eligible for the California Register of Historical Resources as a historic district, Big Stone Lodge and related buildings are worthy of preservation for their rustic architectural style built with local natural materials: huge boulders and massive timber. In addition, notable Poway businessmen envisioned Big Stone Lodge would attract visitors and locals for dining and lodging, and their success represents a turning point in Poway’s development. The case for historic preservation here is well established, but the City of Poway has not yet stepped up to help or acknowledged the property’s immense potential. During a February 2020 workshop, city officials said there was no decision to demolish Big Stone Lodge, despite completion of its environmental review process. However, the property zoning includes an affordable housing overlay and the city identified the parcel as contributing to the state Regional Housing Needs Allocation requirement for affordable housing. SOHO urges Poway officials to undertake preservation and sensitive adaptive reuse of this legendary property, which could include affordable housing and community use. Help SOHO advocate for the multifaceted historic value and robust revival of this emblematic Poway landmark. (Scroll to view more photos) |
