Big Stone Lodge
Designated as Poway Historic Site 16 and eligible for the California Register of Historical Resources as a historic district, Big Stone Lodge and related buildings are laudable for their rustic architectural style built with local natural materials: huge boulders and massive timber. Notable Poway people built Big Stone Lodge to attract visitors and locals, and their achievements represent a turning point in Poway’s development. The case for historic preservation is well established, but the City of Poway has not yet stepped up to help. During a February 2020 workshop, city officials said at the time there was no decision to demolish Big Stone Lodge, despite completion of its environmental review process. However, the property zoning includes an affordable housing overlay and the city identified the parcel as contributing to the state Regional Housing Needs Allocation requirement for affordable housing. SOHO urges preservation and sensitive adaptive reuse, which could include affordable housing and community use, of this emblematic Poway landmark. (Scroll to view more photos) |
